His support for the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, which repealed the Missouri Compromise and allowed for the possibility of slavery in new territories, ignited widespread outrage and further deepened the divide between the North and the South. The ensuing violence in Kansas, known as “Bleeding Kansas,” tarnished Pierce’s reputation and led to significant political unrest.

Despite his efforts to maintain unity, Pierce’s presidency was marred by the increasing polarization that ultimately culminated in the outbreak of the Civil War. His inability to effectively address the issue of slavery and his support for pro-slavery factions alienated many in the North and contributed to his lack of popularity.

Following his presidency, Pierce retired from public life and returned to New Hampshire, where he lived quietly until his death on October 8, 1869. Despite the controversies surrounding his administration, Pierce’s legacy includes his contributions to westward expansion and his efforts to navigate the complex political landscape of his time.
