Instructions for Solving a 9×9 Sudoku Puzzle (Medium Level)

  1. Review Basic Rules:
    • The 9×9 Sudoku grid is divided into nine 3×3 subgrids.
    • Each row, column, and 3×3 subgrid must contain the numbers 1 through 9 exactly once.
    • No number can repeat within any row, column, or 3×3 subgrid.
  2. Begin with Easy Strategies:
    • Start by filling in any obvious numbers using basic techniques.
    • Look for rows, columns, or subgrids with the most numbers filled in, and fill in the missing numbers using the process of elimination.
  3. Apply the Naked Pair Technique:
    • Look for pairs of cells within a row, column, or subgrid that can only contain the same two numbers. These numbers can be eliminated as possibilities for other cells in that row, column, or subgrid.
  4. Apply the Hidden Pair Technique:
    • Find pairs of numbers that only appear in two cells within a row, column, or subgrid. These cells must contain those numbers, so you can eliminate other candidates from these cells.
  5. Use the Box-Line Reduction Technique:
    • When a candidate number appears in just one row or column within a 3×3 subgrid, it can be eliminated from the same row or column in the other two 3×3 subgrids.
  6. Apply the X-Wing Technique:
    • Look for two rows (or columns) where a particular candidate number appears in exactly two cells, and these cells are aligned in the same columns (or rows). You can eliminate this candidate number from other cells in the same columns (or rows).
  7. Employ the Swordfish Technique:
    • Similar to the X-Wing, but involves three rows and three columns. If a candidate number appears in exactly three cells across three rows (or columns), and these cells are aligned in the same columns (or rows), you can eliminate this candidate number from other cells in the same columns (or rows).
  8. Focus on Interactions Between Rows, Columns, and Subgrids:
    • Pay attention to how numbers in rows and columns affect the placement of numbers in subgrids and vice versa. Use these interactions to narrow down possibilities.
  9. Stay Systematic and Organized:
    • Work systematically through the puzzle, focusing on one section at a time.
    • Continuously update your pencil marks as you place numbers and eliminate possibilities.
  10. Check for Errors:
    • Regularly review the puzzle to ensure there are no repeated numbers in any row, column, or subgrid.
    • Correct any errors as soon as you spot them to avoid complicating the puzzle further.
  11. Be Patient and Persistent:
    • Intermediate Sudoku puzzles require patience and logical thinking. If you get stuck, take a break and return to the puzzle with a fresh perspective.
