Figurative Language Examples Matching

This Figurative Language Examples Game introduces students to 12 essential types of figurative language: Alliteration, Simile, Metaphor, Hyperbole, Oxymoron, Personification, Onomatopoeia, Imagery, Symbol, Pun, Cliché, and Irony.

Through repeated exposure to authentic sentence examples, students learn how figurative language is used to create meaning, emphasize ideas, and enhance writing. Instead of memorizing definitions in isolation, students practice recognizing how each figurative device appears in context.

As students play, they must analyze each sentence, determine which figurative technique is being used, and select the correct category. The points-based scoring system encourages careful thinking and rewards accuracy, helping students build confidence and fluency with literary terminology. Immediate feedback allows students to reflect on mistakes and self-correct, reinforcing learning through practice.

By completing multiple rounds, students strengthen their reading comprehension, develop analytical skills, and gain a deeper understanding of how authors use figurative language to convey tone, imagery, humor, and emotion. This game works especially well as independent practice, small-group review, test preparation, or enrichment for Language Arts classrooms.
