President Hayes Crossword Puzzle President Rutherford B. Hayes

Rutherford B. Hayes, the 19th President of the United States, was born on October 4, 1822, in Delaware, Ohio. His father, Rutherford Hayes Jr., died before his birth, leaving his mother, Sophia Birchard Hayes, to raise him and his siblings. Hayes grew up under the care of his hardworking and resourceful mother, who ensured he received a good education.

Hayes attended Kenyon College, graduating as valedictorian in 1842. He then studied law at Harvard Law School, earning his degree in 1845. Hayes began his legal practice in Lower Sandusky (now Fremont), Ohio, and soon moved to Cincinnati, where he became a prominent lawyer and joined the Republican Party.

During the Civil War, Hayes served with distinction in the Union Army, rising to the rank of brevet major general. He was wounded several times but demonstrated great courage and leadership, earning the respect of his peers and superiors.

After the war, Hayes entered politics, serving as a U.S. Congressman from 1865 to 1867. He advocated for civil rights and supported the Reconstruction efforts in the South. In 1868, he was elected Governor of Ohio, a position he held for three terms, focusing on education reform and economic development.

In the contested presidential election of 1876, Hayes ran as the Republican candidate against Democrat Samuel J. Tilden. The election results were highly disputed, leading to the Compromise of 1877, in which Hayes was awarded the presidency in exchange for the withdrawal of federal troops from the South, effectively ending Reconstruction.

As President, Hayes pursued civil service reform, striving to reduce corruption and implement a merit-based system for government employees. He also attempted to reconcile the divisions left by the Civil War, advocating for the rights of African Americans while promoting national unity.

Hayes did not seek re-election and retired to his home in Spiegel Grove, Ohio, in 1881. He remained active in public affairs, advocating for educational improvements and prison reform. Rutherford B. Hayes passed away on January 17, 1893, leaving a legacy of integrity and commitment to public service. His efforts to reform the civil service and his dedication to national reconciliation are remembered as key aspects of his presidency.
