Rounding Numbers Worksheets By Christopher Rudolph

Rounding numbers in mathematics is the process of approximating a number to a certain place value or significant figures. This is done to simplify calculations and make numbers more manageable, especially when dealing with large or complex figures.

When rounding numbers, you determine which digit or digits to keep and which to discard based on the specified rounding rule. For instance, rounding to the nearest whole number involves looking at the digit immediately to the right of the decimal point. If it’s 5 or greater, you round up; if it’s less than 5, you round down.

For example:

  • Rounding 3.7 to the nearest whole number yields 4 because the digit to the right of the decimal point is 7.
  • Rounding 9.2 to the nearest whole number yields 9 because the digit to the right of the decimal point is 2.

You can also round to a specific decimal place, such as tenths, hundredths, etc. In this case, you look at the digit one place further to the right than the desired decimal place to determine whether to round up or down.

For example:

  • Rounding 3.456 to the nearest hundredth yields 3.46 because the digit in the thousandths place (6) is greater than 5.
  • Rounding 7.821 to the nearest tenth yields 7.8 because the digit in the hundredths place (2) is less than 5.

Rounding simplifies calculations while maintaining a reasonable level of accuracy for practical purposes.
