Dividing decimals might seem tricky at first, but it’s actually pretty simple once you get the hang of it. Let’s go through the steps.

Steps to Divide Decimals

  1. Set Up the Problem: Write down the division problem just like you would with whole numbers. For example, if you want to divide 3.6 by 1.2, write it as 3.6 ÷ 1.2
  2. Move the Decimal Point: To make things easier, we can turn the divisor (the number you’re dividing by) into a whole number. To do this, move the decimal point to the right until the divisor is a whole number. Count how many places you move the decimal point.
    • In our example, to make 1.2 a whole number, move the decimal point one place to the right. Now it becomes 12.
    • You must move the decimal point in the dividend (the number being divided) the same number of places. So, move the decimal point in 3.6 one place to the right, which makes it 36.
  3. Rewrite the Problem: Now your problem is 36 ÷ 12. It’s much easier to handle!
  4. Divide as Usual: Now, just divide as if they were whole numbers.
    • 36 divided by 12 is 3.
  5. Place the Decimal Point: If you moved the decimal point in the dividend, make sure to place it correctly in your answer. Since you moved it one place, you don’t need to adjust it further in this case.

Practice Example

Let’s try another example:

Example: Divide 4.56 by 0.3.

  1. Set up the problem: 4.56 ÷ 0.3
  2. Move the decimal point to make the divisor a whole number:
    • Move the decimal in 0.3 one place to the right to get 3.
    • Move the decimal in 4.56 one place to the right to get 45.6.
  3. Rewrite the problem: 45.6 ÷ 3
  4. Divide as usual:
    • 45.6 divided by 3 is 15.2.

So, 4.56 ÷ 0.3 = 15.24

Tips

  • Always move the decimal point in both the divisor and the dividend the same number of places.
  • If there are more decimal places, just keep moving the decimal points until the divisor is a whole number.
  • Check your work by multiplying your answer by the divisor. It should give you back the original dividend.
