This is the only Battle that was fought in the North. Many historians believe that if this battle was won by the Confederates, they may have been able to go on to win the war. However, as it played out, the Confederates won the 1st day, but the second day was a stalemate with neither side really winning. However, the Union had control of the high ground, and on the 3rd day of fighting the Union clearly wins. Pickett’s Charge was a total disaster for the Confederates, and the night of July 3rd they began their retreat. Although not totally defeated, this was the beginning of the end for the Confederates. They would never again regain the strength they had just before this Epic Battle.
