“Ungifted” by Gordon Korman is a humorous and heartwarming novel that explores themes of identity, friendship, and self-discovery. The story centers around Donovan Curtis, a troublemaker who acts impulsively and often finds himself in trouble. One such impulsive act – hitting a statue with a stick and accidentally sending it crashing into the gym during a basketball game – leads to Donovan being mistakenly sent to the Academy for Scholastic Distinction, a school for gifted students.

At the Academy, Donovan feels out of place among the highly intelligent students but tries to blend in to avoid being discovered. His presence at the Academy brings unexpected changes. The gifted students, who are focused on academics and lack social skills, find Donovan’s practical knowledge and street smarts refreshing. He teaches them about teamwork, friendship, and even helps their struggling robotics team. In return, Donovan starts to see the value of his own unique talents and learns that being gifted isn’t just about academics.

The story introduces memorable characters, such as the robotics team members: Chloe, who is socially awkward but brilliant; Abigail, who is highly competitive; and Noah, a genius who struggles with boredom. Dr. Schultz, the strict head of the Academy, is determined to maintain the school’s reputation and becomes suspicious of Donovan’s academic abilities.

Donovan’s family plays a significant role in the narrative. His pregnant sister, Katie, who moves in with Donovan’s family due to marital issues, forms a special bond with the students at the Academy, especially Noah. Her presence adds a layer of warmth and humor to the story.

The climax of the novel occurs during a robotics competition, where Donovan’s resourcefulness and teamwork help the Academy win against the odds. However, his true identity is eventually discovered, and he faces the consequences of his actions. Despite this, Donovan realizes that he has found his place among friends who accept him for who he is.

In the end, “Ungifted” is a story about embracing individuality, the importance of friendship, and the idea that everyone has unique gifts, even if they aren’t immediately apparent. Gordon Korman’s witty writing and relatable characters make this novel an engaging and inspiring read for young audiences.
