Thanksgiving Crossword Puzzle by Christopher Rudolph

Thanksgiving, a cherished American holiday, has a rich history dating back to the early 17th century. The origins of Thanksgiving are often traced to a 1621 celebration at Plymouth Colony, present-day Massachusetts. This event was marked by a three-day feast attended by 53 Pilgrims and around 90 Wampanoag Native Americans. The Pilgrims, having survived a harsh winter with significant help from the Wampanoag, were celebrating their first successful harvest. This feast is widely regarded as the “First Thanksgiving.”

The tradition of giving thanks for a bountiful harvest, however, predated the Pilgrims. Indigenous peoples across North America had long held ceremonies to give thanks for successful harvests and other favorable events. Similarly, European settlers brought their own traditions of thanksgiving celebrations to the New World.

Thanksgiving became an official annual event much later. In 1789, President George Washington issued the first Thanksgiving proclamation by the national government of the United States, calling for a day of public thanksgiving and prayer. However, it wasn’t until 1863, during the Civil War, that Thanksgiving became a national holiday. President Abraham Lincoln, influenced by the persistent efforts of Sarah Josepha Hale, a magazine editor and writer, proclaimed a national day of “Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens,” to be celebrated on the last Thursday of November.

In 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt moved Thanksgiving up a week to extend the holiday shopping season, a decision that met with controversy and was later reversed. In 1941, Congress established Thanksgiving as a federal holiday to be observed on the fourth Thursday in November.

Today, Thanksgiving is celebrated with a blend of traditions, including family gatherings, feasting on turkey and other festive foods, and expressing gratitude for the blessings of the past year. It remains a time for reflection, community, and gratitude, deeply embedded in American culture.

Understanding all the characters and their relationships in a novel or play is crucial for meaningful analysis. Characters drive the plot, embody themes, and reflect the work’s deeper messages. Knowing who they are, their roles, and how they connect provides a foundation for interpreting conflicts, motivations, and resolutions. Misunderstanding these dynamics can lead to confusion and a shallow grasp of the text. For instance, in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, understanding the Capulet-Montague feud is essential to appreciating the tragedy’s exploration of love and enmity. Similarly, in Of Mice and Men, the relationships between George, Lennie, and other characters illuminate themes of friendship and isolation.

Interactive flash cards are a powerful tool to help students solidify their grasp of characters and relationships. These tools provide an engaging way to repeatedly review key information. Students can flip cards to test their memory of each character’s role, traits, and significance. For example, a flash card for The Great Gatsby might feature “Nick Carraway” on one side and “The story’s narrator; Gatsby’s neighbor and confidant” on the other. This interactive approach allows learners to break down complex casts of characters into manageable pieces, making it easier to track relationships and their impact on the story.

With the groundwork of character knowledge established, students can delve deeper into thematic analysis, symbolism, and the author’s intent. Interactive flash cards not only reinforce understanding but also build confidence, equipping students with the tools they need for more nuanced and sophisticated literary exploration.
