The Greatest Common Factor (GCF) in mathematics refers to the largest number that divides evenly into two or more other numbers. It is essentially the largest common divisor shared by a set of numbers. Understanding the GCF is crucial in simplifying fractions, solving equations, and factoring polynomials.

For instance, let’s consider the numbers 12 and 18. The factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12, while the factors of 18 are 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, and 18. The common factors of 12 and 18 are 1, 2, 3, and 6. Among these common factors, the greatest one is 6. Therefore, the GCF of 12 and 18 is 6.

Another example involves the numbers 24 and 36. The factors of 24 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, and 24, while the factors of 36 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12, 18, and 36. The common factors of 24 and 36 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12. Among these, the greatest one is 12. Hence, the GCF of 24 and 36 is 12.

In summary, the GCF is the largest number that divides evenly into two or more given numbers, helping simplify mathematical operations involving those numbers.
