Percentage Worksheets By Christopher Rudolph

In mathematics, a percentage is a way of expressing a fraction or a ratio as a portion of 100. It’s a convenient way to compare quantities and understand proportions. Percentages are denoted by the symbol “%”.

To calculate a percentage, you take the part you’re interested in (the numerator) and divide it by the whole (the denominator), then multiply by 100. This gives you the proportion of the whole expressed as a fraction of 100.

For example, let’s say you have a class of 30 students, and 15 of them are girls. To find out what percentage of the class is female, you would divide 15 (number of girls) by 30 (total number of students), which equals 0.5. Then, multiply 0.5 by 100 to get 50%. So, 50% of the class are girls.

Another example could be calculating a discount. If an item originally costs $80 but is on sale for $64, you can find the discount percentage by dividing the discount amount ($80 – $64 = $16) by the original price ($80), which equals 0.2. Multiply 0.2 by 100 to get 20%. So, there’s a 20% discount on the item.

Percentages are widely used in various fields, including finance, science, and everyday life, to analyze data, make comparisons, and understand relationships between different quantities.
