Who, Whom, and Hoot

© Rudolph 2009

Henry the hooting owl

didn’t have a clue

about when he should use whom

or when he should use who.

His friend Willy the wise owl

said it is as easy as swimming in a pool.

You just need to know

a very simple rule.

There are just two things

that need to be checked

in order to decide

which word is correct.

If the question can be answered

using the word HE,

then the choice is

as easy as can be.

Use WHO.

Who needs to see?

He needs to see.

Who wants some tea?

He wants some tea.

Who likes to ski?

He likes to ski.

If the question can be answered

using the word HIM,

then the choice is

as easy as

lifting one pound at the gym.

Use WHOM.

For whom should I spy?

I should spy for him.

For whom should I cry?

I should cry for him?

For whom should I try?

I should try for him.

So, now Henry the hooting owl

knows how to use whom and who.

Who needs to hoot?

He needs to hoot.

For whom should I hoot?

I should hoot for him.

I just hope you all

give a hoot too

about when to use whom

and when to use who.
