The Thirteen British Colonies or American Colonies were a group of English colonies on the Atlantic coast. They were founded in the 17th and 18th centuries. The American Revolutionary War began in April 1775 and the United States of America declared its full independence in July of 1776. Before declaring independence, the Thirteen Colonies were grouped into three separate regions: New England Colonies consisted of New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. The Middle Colonies consisted of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. The Southern Colonies consisted of Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. The 13 Colonies came to have very similar constitutional, political, and legal systems. The first colonial settlement was in Jamestown in 1607. The New England colonies, Maryland, and Pennsylvania were founded for reasons related to the practice of religions. The other colonies were established for business and economic gain. The Middle Colonies were established on what was once a Dutch colony, New Netherland. All 13 colonies were part of Britain’s possessions in the Americas.
