“The Call of the Wild” is a novel written by American author Jack London, published in 1903. The story is set in the Yukon during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush and follows the adventures of a domesticated dog named Buck.

Summary:

Buck, a large and powerful St. Bernard-Scotch Shepherd mix, lives a comfortable life on a California estate. His world is turned upside down when he is stolen from his home and sold into the brutal life of an Alaskan sled dog during the gold rush. Buck is forced to adapt to the harsh and unforgiving wilderness, where he encounters a series of brutal owners, fights with other dogs, and learns to trust his instincts.

As Buck faces the challenges of the wild, he taps into his primal instincts and gradually becomes more wolf-like in behavior. He starts to hear “the call of the wild,” which beckons him to embrace his ancestral instincts and become a true wild creature.

Buck’s journey takes a significant turn when he comes under the ownership of John Thornton, a kind and caring prospector. Under Thornton’s guidance, Buck experiences a sense of belonging and loyalty he has never felt before. However, the pull of the wild remains strong.

The novel explores themes of survival, the primal instincts within all living beings, and the conflict between civilization and the wilderness. It ultimately portrays Buck’s transformation from a domesticated pet into a wild and free creature who answers “the call of the wild” by joining a wolf pack in the end.

“The Call of the Wild” is a timeless classic that highlights the enduring power of nature and the indomitable spirit of a once-domesticated dog’s journey toward rediscovering his true self in the wilderness.
